Frequently Asked Questions
First Class Questions
What should I wear? Do I need to bring anything to my first class?
Dress in athletic clothing you feel comfortable moving and sweating in. Bring a bottle of water.
For Krav Maga class, we don’t allow training with outdoor shoes on our blue mats. You are welcome to train barefoot (which is what most people do) or bring any non-cleat athletic shoes that you only wear on our mats. You’ll want to bring them in and change into them once on the mats.
Long term, we recommend a mouth guard and groin protector for training, but neither are essential for your first class.
What should I expect for my first class?
A standard, one-hour Krav Maga class at Krav Maga ATX will start off with a short warm-up, usually involving simple calisthenics, partner work, and movement.
Once everyone is warm and ready to train, you’ll practice striking to a pad, learning to use punches, kicks, elbows, and knees to damage an attacker.
As class continues, you’ll be led through hands-on scenarios, learning to defend against attacks such as strangulation, headlocks, and incoming strikes so that you can fight back, neutralize the threat, and escape.
Expect a good workout and a lot of scenario and stress-based drills, all done in a safe and welcoming environment for any level of fitness and martial arts experience.
Kids’ & Women’s Classes
Do you have kids’ classes?
Yes, we currently offer classes for kids who are 8-12 years old. Our kids’ classes focus on physical self defense, verbal boundary setting, predatory behavior identification, bully prevention, bystander intervention, as well as physical athletic skills such as balance, coordination, and strength!
You must be 13 years old to participate in our adult Krav Maga classes.
If you would like your teen to participate in one of our adult classes, here are a few things to know.
- These are classes with adult subject matter. We speak frankly—though not graphically—about assault, including sexual assault. We use adult language in classes.
- In Krav Maga classes, students will be expected to work with a variety of partners of all shapes and sizes, with multiple partners, etc. They’ll be expected to hold pads for partners.
If you have questions about whether our Krav Maga classes are right for your teen, come watch (or take!) a class. You can also reach out with a call or text at 512-850-8155.
Do you offer a women’s only class?
Yes! We have a Women’s Self Defense class on Thursdays at 7pm. This is a class for cis and trans women, and nonbinary folks who feel comfortable being in a women-centered class. Read more about our classes.
